YOGIS Do AcroYoga to unlock their superpower (Private Class With Paul Teodo And Casey Lee)

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

These two yogis got challenged with trying an Acroyoga private class for the first time.

From this experience they realised how Acroyoga can help them unlock their superpowers as I touched upon in this article.

I'm going to go into more detail on how acro can grant you a SUPERPOWER of better reading and understanding others.

So let me explain how and why...

After about 6 months into my proper Acroyoga journey, when I was practising every day.

I realised that I had developed a skill for weighing people with my feet.

Having put enough different bodies on my feet over time and getting a good enough feeling of their various weights.

I was suddenly able to take a flyer put them on my feet and accurately guess their weight to within maybe +/- 1kg.

Cool party trick huh...

Feel free to test me on it next time you see me, haha.

But this is just measuring someone's physical weight...

With this realisation that I had developed this skill, I also realised I had inadvertently developed or improved a much more useful skill.

That is the incredibly useful skill of understanding someone's character and personality better.

I realised that by just playing Acroyoga with someone for a few minutes I gained a deep understanding of many of their basic character traits.

It's like a very quick look into what kind of a person they are, and it's hugely revealing!

Within a few short minutes of playing acro with someone you can find out:

  • How trusting they are

  • How fearful they are

  • How they deal with their fears

  • How confident they are

  • How controlling they are

  • How well they listen and follow instructions

  • Whether they panic or are calm under pressure

  • How well they communicate their feelings with others

  • How comfortable or uncomfortable they are with physical touch

  • How they interact with strangers

  • How they work with others

  • Whether they like to lead or follow

  • How big their ego is

  • How friendly and open they are

I mean honestly, this list could go on and on.

You really get such a deep insight into someone's personality when you play Acroyoga together.

Maybe you doubt me, so I'll give you the reason why this works now.

It's because it is impossible to mask these aspects of your character so completely when doing Acroyoga.

It is a challenging, unusual, teamworking, communicative practice. There is no way to do something like this with someone without revealing some of these aspects of your character.

If I ask someone "do you want to play acro with me?" Their response already gives an indication...

  • "It looks scary, is it dangerous?" - fearful, nervous

  • "wow that looks cool, hell yes!" - excited, open, confident (maybe over-confident)

  • "umm, okay" - not very communicative, unsure

These are simplified examples I'm using to illustrate a point.

But you get the idea...

Then there's the way they physically respond, emotionally respond with their subconscious body movements etc. and more.

There is one caveat that I will add, which is:

This takes time and experience.

The more people you meet and play acro with, the more personalities you are exposed to.

The more you start to recognise patterns in the way people respond and act.

But over time you will come to realise that this really does work, and it really is an awesome superpower!

It's so useful!

You can play acro with someone and in a few minutes realise...

Is this someone I enjoy and want to be friends with?

Or...

Is this someone who I really want to avoid because our personalities don't suit?

and so on...

I hope this email inspires you and helps you realise that you can start building your acro superpower too!

Just by bringing some awareness to what I've talked about next time you do acro.

If you're completely new to Acroyoga then don't worry about this yet.

We can help teach you the basics and start your journey off on the right foot.

Paul Teodo

It looks really cool, beautiful.

Casey

Yeah, I'm excited to learn more so that I can join in on that next time.

Caspian

Okay, let's get straight into the warm-ups and the Acro. So if you come from a movement practice, yoga background, martial arts, dancing things like that. Obviously, having the body awareness in the controller is going to make these things easier. I think this is a good point to put a little disclaimer,

Paul Teodo

I've been teaching for seven and I've been practising for 11. I think I have a lot of body awareness, core strength, core stability. I'm used to being upside down. So I think a lot of the physical awareness was there. And also mentally I wasn't really afraid.

Caspian

But don't worry, if you're finding it harder. It's not looking just as perfectly easy as these guys are making it

Sheryl

Easier for them to catch. Whenever we're sharing.

Caspian

Yeah, they're doing really good for the first time. If you want to try it, please use a spotter. Do you want to try basing?

Casey

Really?

Caspian

Yeah!!, we're gonna be using an Acro back it's gonna just add a bit of extra support for the base and cushioning for the back as well.

Casey

For me when I was basing. One It feels really good because it feels really nice in my body. But I think for me the level of trust that I need to have in myself

Caspian

That is insane. So good.

Casey

I want to feel trusted so I need to be in tune with my capabilities as well. But it yeah, it builds more trust in my body that I'm able to hold somebody and support somebody and allow them the space to surrender.

Paul Teodo

Just realizing that if you have the right teacher, even somebody who's smaller can be the base

Caspian

Impressive first time for both of you, that's insane. Just goes to show that anyone can base anyone and you guys did an amazing job both first times smashed it. Let's move on to the next thing

Casey

One major one is Yeah, physical safety. And I think naturally if you have that from the beginning and that that builds you, you gain a deeper sense of trust, the deeper intimacy and the trust as well.

Caspian

If you're ever feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, just say down and that's the cue for everyone together including your spotter so all safely come back to the ground. We keep it really simple and short one word and it's also about not letting the ego get in the way so aspects of trust as well

Casey

Because safety was probably the most important one there.

Caspian

I'm behind you just so you know.

Casey

I love being inverted as well. I like to feel a sense of weightlessness. Good to be in the air and being supported.

Caspian

Oooo.... second go they're coming up

Casey

The star, I really enjoyed

Caspian

You're a big star in the sky.

Paul Teodo

Feels Okay for you?

Casey

That feels good because it was a challenge as well to find that balance

Caspian

Think of a tripod headstand position. Great stuff smashed it. Let's switch around the roles. I'm here I'm here. I'm good.

Casey

I think the press up for me was quite hard. It was a challenge. It takes a lot of strength to push out with my legs and with my core

Caspian

It's on the edge there

Paul Teodo

The first time I went upside down and star because I wasn't sure whether or not she could hold me. But after like two seconds, I was fine.

Caspian

There you go first time,

Paul Teodo

but I've never gotten to be a flyer because every time I've ever done Acroyoga always been the base. I'm just gonna say that was so much fun and she is strong.

Casey

You know you're upside down so which way around becomes a little bit confusing.

Caspian

I'm here just so you know.

Casey

Knowing that I had Caspian that as a spotter it helped me relax a lot more.

Caspian

I got one hand coming away,

Casey

But it was navigationally, challenge challenging. Yeah.

Paul Teodo

Got the one finger

Caspian

One finger. Okay, okay, one thing I'm loving about you guys is your attitude and courage just to give it a go and try it.

Paul Teodo

Yeah it's fun.

Caspian

I consider that a big success. I think they did pretty awesome. Just to be clear, this is quite advanced for beginner stuff. Yeah, if you're back at home and you're not used to doing this kind of stuff, this is challenging. So they're doing amazing today. What was your most memorable or favourite bit?

Casey

For the base, I find in my personal practice, I don't support my lower back a lot,

Paul Teodo

When you take your hands over my shoulders

Casey

So being able to just like have that fully relax. Oh my god, this is amazing. decompression

Paul Teodo

Spinal decompression

Casey

That's was really really yummy. I could have hung out there for a while.

Paul Teodo

It's actually super relaxing just to be the base and you see a her spine is lengthening. And you see how she's going to like a really nice meditative state.

Caspian

So is havean

Paul Teodo

It's cool to be the giver and the receiver.

Caspian

Very nice. We have an upcoming episode about yoga clothes and hair ties in Acroyoga. So check that out to see what might help here

Paul Teodo

It's a meditation with another person. It's really a beautiful experience. You have to be so present when you're both the base and the flyer. Time went by really fast. Yeah, like a meditation very relaxing like it was it was awesome.

Caspian

Thank you guys for watching. We hope you enjoyed this episode with Paul and Casey
